Macro Photography

The art of making small things look bigger, pretty useful I’d say

GUYS!!! Oh my goodness look at that fucking water droplet on the petal! So g-dang cool. These are hands down some of the coolest photos I’ve taken entirely on purpose. So we’re all stuck inside these days. And as someone who really likes to get outside for most of my photography this has led to some creative slumps. Beyond catching up on projects I’ve been putting off, the lack of new stuff to tackle has left me kind of bummed out. But being inside is also forcing me to look at other ways to stay creative. It’s just a new set of circumstances that I’m hoping to make the most of. Especially since I finished Tiger King and DOOM Eternal already. So Anyway. I’ve always liked macro photography because it makes small things look bigger and that is just cool.

My photo friend and co-worker Mladen * plug * (@mladen_visuals and www.mladenvisuals.com) gave me some great tips for setting up a small home studio. My condo has lots of huge windows so we get tons of natural light, all I needed was to harness that light as best as possible. He told me to get a piece of white card stock and put it opposite the window to bounce the light back onto my subject. Next up was a stage, I wanted a neutral background so that I could really focus on the subjects; also reflections are cool. I took the glass out of a picture frame, and yeeted the family photo off the balcony, we won’t be needing it for this purpose. I cleaned it as best I could, dust is a fucking asshole nightmare substance, may it burn in swiffer hell. I placed the glass on a black notebook I had and used a felt-ish leather-ish backgammon box for the backdrop. All in all it was a janky ass situation but the results were pretty great. Couple of spurts with a spray bottle and you’ve got yourself a set up.

It was a pretty fun adventure to play around with and the results got me really stoked to try and find more shit to photograph. And it got me excited to find ways to CLEAN DUST OFF GLASS. Because lordy lord those coffee bean pics were a nightmare (assuming I decide to fix them manually in post later - tbd). (this is Drew from the future: it’s determined. I did not bother)

I’ve been trying more stuff with macro shots, I may keep updating this gallery with new images. Once you have the setup it’s not too bad to make some bangers. (I’m working on dealing with the dust and reflections. Pls be gentle with me.
